An honest, if flawed, handbook to making a living as a professional speaker
By Ian D. Griffin
Patrick Schwerdtfeger has written a uncompromisingly personal book filled with hard-won, authentic and invaluable advice for anyone interested in what it takes to become a success in today’s ‘gig economy’.
Patrick shares unique insights from his own career as a self-employed professional over the last 14 years, and as a full-time speaker since 2007. There’s as much to learn from his mistakes, and the flaws that are revealed in his strategy to make it in the hard-scrabble world of professional speaking, as there is from following in his footsteps. In fact, there’s not many with the tenacity to even attempt what he did to build his business. It took years before he made a profit. Starting with no real credibility, he built his career from the ground up, one brick at a time. In contrast to those speakers who have accomplished something incredible that allows them to charge top dollar, Patrick started by speaking in front of audiences, any audiences, for free. The numbers speak for themselves: in 2008 he spoke at 72 events and got paid for just two, 127 events in 2009 and got paid for six, 64 events in 2010 and got paid for 21.
This is as much a memoir as a business manual. There are harrowing stories about his parents’ dementia, unique insights into challenges of life on the road, and brutal honesty about sorry state of his finances. Each chapter starts by listing his credit card debt at that stage of his career. It’s not until he’s many years into his journey that he finally pays off his debts and moves on from survival rations (chicken thighs and steamed broccoli night after night) to a more varied diet.
Freelancers and self-employed professionals in general will learn valuable lessons from this report about what happens at the coal-face of entrepreneurial activity. However, emerging speakers, specifically those who enjoy success in Toastmasters and now desire to make it as keynote speakers on the pro-circuit, will learn the most useful lessons.
It’s apparent that Patrick, as the song says, “did it my way”. He’s focused, some might say obsessed, with being an international keynote speaker. Despite having audio-visual products and books that could grow into robust alternate streams of income, Patrick focuses relentlessly on maximizing his speaking fees. He reluctantly embraces consulting and product sales, clinging to his wish to be a pure-play keynoter, not a 'platform speaker'.
Patrick highly recommends joining Toastmasters (excellent advice), but confesses to never having joined the National Speakers Association (NSA)—which would have cut his learning curve by years!
However, no member of the NSA would ever share the details of speaking fees, from what a beginning speaker can expect to what top professionals earn and the percentages speaker bureaus charge. Patrick holds nothing back. Chapter 55 on ‘Speaking Fees’ is worth the price of the book – this is information you’ll find nowhere else.
Another strength of the book is Patrick’s mastery of social media and the important role a website, podcast, video and list-building tools have to getting booked and attracting clients. he's a world-class expert on these topics.
If you’ve ever wondered how to sleep in economy class, conduct a pot deal with the Hells Angels, get a book deal, talk to foreign ambassadors or take afternoon tea on top of the world’s tallest building, Patrick has you covered. Anyone who has ever dreamed of being able to charge fees for speaking in front of audiences should invest in Patrick’s book. Take his advice to heart: “The road to being is through doing.” Put the lessons in this book into practice, avoid his mistakes, and build your own career.

The Road to Being is Through Doing
By Thomas M. Loarie
Author Patrick Schwerdtfeger (“Marketing Shortcuts for the Self-Employed,” “Webify Your Business,” and “Make Yourself Useful”) began his quest to become a professional speaker at age 10. Today, he is a highly sought-after speaker who has dined with ambassadors, CEOs, and other prominent people at hundreds of events in dozens of countries around the world.
“Keynote Mastery” details Patrick’s journey to the top. He covers setbacks, successes, panic attacks, being the victim of a speaker’s scam, his introduction to podcasting, book publishing, the TEDx Talk experience, the value of Toastmasters, people who influenced him, his first $1500/hr gig, speakers bureaus, the National Speakers association, target markets for newbies, what goes on behind the curtain for professional speakers, Google rankings, and the challenges of being self-employed.
The book is also a memoir that touches on the author’s relationship with his mother and father, and the values that shaped his life. The love his father showed his mother, even in the most challenging of circumstances, is a model for all relationships. The portraits he paints are poignant and will tug at your heart.
Schwerdtfeger, as a reminder of the financial challenges faced by all entrepreneurs, highlights his credit card balances throughout his journey. His warning, you must believe deeply in your vision as this is not for the faint of heart. It demands focus, persistence, pivoting, embracing uncertainty, and a lot of hard work. His story reminded me of the book, “Joy,” now a movie starring Jennifer Lawrence, which is a biography of Joy Mangano, who overcame the “the thousand nos” and financial setbacks to become a self-made millionaire. Mangano saw herself as an average housewife much as Schwerdtfeger paints the picture of being an “average” guy.
The message is simple. You, too, can achieve great things once you figure out what is right for you, learn what is needed, and invest in it with all your heart and soul.
Tips summarizing key points are threaded throughout the book and sixteen worksheets covering key action items are provided on-line. These worksheets will prove to be invaluable to anyone seeking to be a professional speaker. Some of the topics include: Identify Your Strengths, Think Bigger, Platform vs Keynote Speakers, Position Your Book, Add Permanence, Starting a Video Blog, the Structure of Keynote Speech, and Speaking Extras (to establish a professional look).
“Keynote Mastery” is well written and will be an easy read. Schwerdtfeger’s story portrays the reality faced by entrepreneur and contains important insights for anyone seeking to follow “The Road Less Traveled.”
Schwerdtfeger admits to trying many things…many of which failed. But reading between the lines, one will quickly see that these failures provided great insights. He was forced to pivot until he refined his approach, one that has now put him on the road to success. He was in the game and never gave up. He has learned that “The Road to Being was Through Doing.

This book not only takes you on a remarkable journey of the "real life" rise of a professional speaker but it gives you amazing
By Karen Clark
I've been following Patrick for several years and even taught a Meetup class based on his Webify Your Business book so I've been aware of his progression through the speaking world for quite some time. This book not only takes you on a remarkable journey of the "real life" rise of a professional speaker but it gives you amazing insights into the inner game of success. I love the periodical update of his credit card debt. As a fellow speaker I can relate! I am eager to see what becomes of his Speaker Syndicate idea mentioned in the book and can't wait to participate! As always, an incredibly valuable resource from Patrick for his readers.
