One of the Best

This is one of the most readable environmental texts I've seen.

It is very comprehnsive and the coverage of the newest scientific results in the science of resource conservation is simply excellent. The content is oriented around a group of themes and applied to the concept of ecosystems and their management. Is almost as if the author has takrn the first halting steps toward a unified environmental theory.

Two negative points though. Coverage of forest resources is a little thin, and like most textbooks, the price is way too high.

A Classic of the Genre

Dr. Wright's text has really become a classic of the environmental science field for good reason: it elucidates the basic principles of environmental science with depth and readability. This tome is not in its 10th edition because it lacks merit. On the contrary, this text presents the relevant topics in a more organized and rigorous manner than any other on the shelf. Students gain a fundamental grounding in the topics and issues of this emerging field, no mean task considering their great breadth.

The reviewers who have rated this book poorly have done so largely based on personal political doctrine. These people have missed the point. If Dr. Wright (or any other scientist) expresses distate for the current administration's stance on environmental issues, it is precisely because this administration has ignored and censored valid science in furthering their political agenda. Dr. Wright is merely advocating that the existing science be examined fairly and openly so that we can deal with pressing environmental issues like global climate change in the best possible manner.

Bottom line: a great introduction to environmental science, but not pleasant reading for members of the flat earth society.

Compelling, Comprehensive, and Concise

This is certainly one of the most well-written upper level environmental science books I've come across. The written narrative is loaded with important information, concepts, and vocabulary, but is written in a way that is still accessable to the honors/AP level environmental science student. A great deal of data is presented in the book to reinforce the ideas presented. Even better, many of the graphs and other diagrams used offer a different angle than you see in most other environmental science texts.

The authors even have a few chapters covering issues generally not given much space in other texts. For example, an entire chapter covering pest management. This textbook is very much deserving to be looked at in the same light as the much-adopted Miller text.

I choose this book for my son, not having a male role model I worry if I'm giving him the right tool to become a man. I find to many are still boys in today's society. I found the I formation very helpful and wish I had read it before I choose who would be his father. Thank you for your endless work, I hope all families would take the time to read it.

Thought provoking

Excellent read. The importance of training your body is one that everyone is familiar with. However, to live with excellence one must also train the mind. The path of our lives is led first by our thoughts. A great reminder that to maintain proper emotional balance which results in a higher quality of life, you must first look at self and your internal dialog. Constantly capturing every thought and filtering it through the proper spiritual perspective.
I enjoyed it immensely.

Great way to grow real men!

This is a great book that talks about how to make real men - men who don't have any crazy ideas about their "feminine side" or how they should be apologetic for the way they were born. Chuck has hit the nail on the head and this is a book that everyone should read - those with boys or those who know boys!

Inadequate and incorrect information about the Sun

My wife is evaluating the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Science series for her 3rd grade class. Doesn't get my vote.

One single page about the Sun, with an absolutely minuscule amount of useful information, and they got the core temperature completely wrong: it says 15M�C (which is correct) or 59M�F (which isn't).

Nothing about the fact that it's 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System, nothing about what KIND of gases its made out of, nothing about the surface temperature.

Visit London without actually going there.

This is the book if you want to re-visit London with actually going there. I spent a few years there in my teens and 20's, and I've been back a few times since, so I know it pretty well. This book brought me back, and it is an introduction to London for my daughter, with whom I am going to London in June. So it is a retrospective and a glimpse into the now as well. It recommends shops, restaurants, historically and architecturally significant places, etc. Good as a memory jogger, conversation starter or an introduction. Illustrations are fab. Love it!

I also bought "Paris Sketchbook" and highly recommend it - but if I had to choose between the two books, this one is even lovelier. The colors and details are wonderful, plus the selection of pictures is great.

Excellent work, but parts of it may need an instructor's guidance

I used an earlier edition of this fine book some years ago in teaching a college-level history of rock and roll, and the only reason I give it four rather than five stars is the obscene price. Stuessy's aim in writing the book was not just to introduce the history of rock and roll, but to introduce students to the various elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre) and of musical formal structures: these items are covered in detail, relating to the music of the appropriate chapter, in end-of-chapter supplements. In other words, Stuessy is trying in part to promote musical literacy among people who do not take a more traditional class in "music appreciation." I would not expect that many people without some formal musical training could make complete sense of the supplements, but it is a textbook, not a self-help manual, and I had great success with the book in class. The main text, however, is independent of the more technical supplements, and can be read as an excellent and insightful history of rock and roll.

This book has a publication date of 2008, and while it thoroughly covers the history of rock music through the 1980's, it's very unfortunate that it does not provide significant coverage of the last two decades. The 00's are almost over, and there have been significant changes to rock over the past two decades that deserve much greater coverage.

There is barely any coverage of the grunge era, and little or no coverage of the post-grunge era, the fusion of metal and hip-hop (Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine, Papa Roach), the new alternative metal scene of the 00's (Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle), the re-emergence of punk and the new genres it has spurred (emo, new garage rock, pop-punk), the fusion of rock music with dance (Finger Eleven, Good Charlotte), or the thorough history and maturing of rap and hip hop. The last two decades have provided a very rich history of developments in rock music and should be covered if you are going to claim to provide a "complete" history of rock music through 2008. Rock music does not just cover the "60s, 70s, 80s, and today." "Today" should not be inclusive of the 90s and 00s, for each decade deserves its own unique chapter in the history of the most advanced form of popular music in the history of the world.

A Great Book on History of People who shaped the World

This book is great for what it is ...thought provoking and a catalyst for the reader to do further research on the individuals listed. The team of authors make a good argument for why they have selected the individual and the person's ranking. Of course this type of book/list leads to disputes as to where or why a person is ranked but there's nothing wrong with that. This is not a scholarly book with a complete bio on the individuals but a brief account of what they accomplished and why it was important. Our world history was shaped by people who accomplished remarkable things and many of the people listed here you never heard of but you will know their accomplishment in most cases but you didn't realize who was responsible for it. This book will tell you. If you are interested in history and fascinated by the people who shaped the world I think you will enjoy this book as much as I did. The original publishing was in 1998 but the final addition with updates was published in 2006. I recommend the 2006 edition.
