I definitely learned some new vocabulary words reading this book. Luckily I read it on my iPad; in book form I would have needed a dictionary close by. I like a lot of background and detail, but the characters did not "come alive" for me as they do in a Georgette Heyer book. And I will never understand poetry. At least nothing deeper than the man from Nantucket. I had to take notes to keep track of the characters, and I referred to them often. Sigh.

I'm glad I decided to read this story again.

It has been a long time since I first read The Case of the Gilded Fly and I'm really glad that I found some time to sit down and enjoy it again after all these years. That is one of the things I love so much about these old, classic mysteries. No matter how much time has passed the story always seems just as exciting as it was the first time around. Modern mystery writers could do themselves a huge favor by immersing themselves in writings of the 1930's, 40's and 50's.

Gervase Fen is an Oxford don who specializes in English literature but really wants to work on murder cases. His longtime friend, Sir Richard Freeman, Chief Constable of Oxford, really wanted to study and critique English literature. These two made wonderful counterpoints because they both wanted to concentrate most on the thing the other did for a living. These two characters are wonderfully written by Edmund Crispin. Mainly, for me, because we get to see the best of both professions but given to us from the point of view of the character we would not necessarily expect.

The book opens in a most clever way. All the characters make the railway journey from London to Oxford within days of each other. Each is described during the train trip in wonderful detail concerning their reasons for going to Oxford and the reader is thoroughly acquainted with the characters by the time they all arrive at their destination. Because of the abrasive nature of one character, it is pretty obvious who the murder victim will be but Crispin takes his time leading up to the murder. By the time it happens, you are very much in sympathy with whoever decided to do this person in and Fen's quandry about whether or not to prove the person guilty is rather easy to understand. Because, Fen does know immediately who the murderer is. I, on the other hand, was not so quick off the mark. I had someone else chosen and resolutely hung on to that person until the bitter end.

Crispin has the Gervase Fen character utilize his vast knowlege of English literature very extensively. Sometimes, it can be somewhat confusing to someone (such as myself) who has only a basic smattering of knowlege of the subject. Still, one of the references did prompt me to do a little research to seek out the quote and read it in its entirety. I must confess that I find myself still scratching my head to try to decide if I think the (first) murder could have taken place in just that way. Wow, what a marksman! and on the spur of the moment too! Also, the motive for the first murder seemed to be rather weak for my taste. I would have liked for a weightier matter to have been the catalyst from which this malevolence sprang.

I love these old mysteries. I think they contain huge doses of character and charm. I really like to set aside uninterrupted time to fully involve myself in the atmosphere of the story. If this sounds like something you enjoy also, then Edmund Crispin could be just the author you are looking for. If you've already met Fen, Mrs. Fen and the little Fen consider going back for another time to a world which probably never existed anyplace outside mystery fiction but which I sincerely wish I had inhabited, even if just for a short time.

This is typical Crispin, with the added joy of a glimpse into the inner workings of an English repertory company putting together a new play. I deducted a star because of Crispin's compulsive use of obscure words, but I must admit I like his books partly because of his precise, loving use of the English language. Without the Kindle's instant access to the dictionary, it'd be irritating, and even with the dictionary you don't always get a definition because the words are so very obscure. Other than that, it's a by-the-numbers Golden Age mystery that should satisfy fans who love Christie, etc.

I enjoy Lis Wiehl books

I enjoy Lis Wiehl books! Although I had read one or two of these, I loved being able to read from one to the next without waiting for the next book to come out. And even though I had read a couple, it did not spoil my enjoyment of reading through the entire Triple Threat series! I would definitely recommend this series. By the way, if you haven't read "Snapshot"--that is a must read!

Same old same old!

Really, really awful. I generally like Robert Kiyosaki's books and his overall message but this book is so poorly written it's nearly unreadable. Mr. Kiyosaki not only rehashes the same old material as his previous writings he actually repeats the same content in this book over and over. Some of the charts appear three times! The end result is a book that reads like his editor has dementia. A cobbled up mess that is nearly impossible to follow full of repeated fluff and very little new content. I wish Mr. Kiyosaki would write an autobiographical piece. He seems like a bright, successful guy with a great story to tell. The devil is in the details however, and as a reader and a fan, I'd like some.

Grade 9 Up–While the leader of the Outsiders, Nightwing, has deliberately maintained his emotional distance, the others have continued to develop friendships. But are they all who they seem to be? Arsenal has been receiving advice from Batman, but why would he be helping the Outsiders? How was the security base breached? Is one of the superheroes working against the group? Not only must they worry about one another, but the Outsiders also encounter an unexpected evil that does not come from someone with superpowers. Since this is outside of their realm of expertise, they must enlist the help of humankind–specifically John Walsh of Americas Most Wanted. Although this is an entertaining and exciting graphic novel, its an optional purchase. The background information required to follow the story is almost overwhelming, and readers who are not aficionados of the DC comic world could go crazy attempting to sort it all out. However, fans of the previous titles will not be disappointed as the characters continue to develop in engaging ways. Despite some typical graphic novel fare (heroines with large breasts and short skirts, for example), there is hardly any spandex to be seen, and the compelling artwork propels the story forward. Gr. 10-12. Former Real World cast member and the creator of the graphic novel Pedro and Me (2000) turns in something quite different here. The Outsiders is a team in turmoil, and readers will barely have a chance to get the characters straight before they are plunked into the middle of an even bigger, stranger drama----a brutal hunt for vengeance against a slavery cartel with ties to one of the team's own members. Things straighten out eventually as the Outsiders learn that Batman has been secretly pulling their strings, and a confrontation between the Caped Crusader and Outsider Nightwing, Batman's former protege, crackles with paranoia and leads to an exciting showdown. Character profiles, which appear at the beginning of the book, don't sufficiently set up the action, and the cliffhanger ending is a little confusing. The overall tone, however, is fittingly dark, the action scenes are extremely well choreographed, and Winick's surprisingly gritty writing (which includes occasional rough language) packs a plot twist into nearly every chapter. Add this to graphic novel collections in need of some hard-hitting superhero action. Jesse Karp

Pretty good, but...

I love the first two books, but #3 is, well....

First, what's good:

The artwork is the best it's been so far in the series. There are a pile of pencillers working on this collection, but all of their unique styles fit well together. Also, the author (Judd Winick) throws some great curveballs at the reader, nice plot twists, and quirky humor.

What's bad:

A good chunk of this book is about child abuse. How the heck does this fit into this funny, action-packed, fantasy world that Winick has created for the series? They use the TV show "America's Most Wanted" (complete with real life hero John Walsh) and it just doesn't fit. Maybe Winick was trying to make the book feel more real, and it does give some insight into the past of a team member. Even so, it comes close to ruining the book. It's like when sit-coms throw in those weird episodes about something serious (like that Family Ties when Tom Hanks plays an alchoholic uncle, or that Different Strokes when Arnold is molested).

Anyway, the book ends with a cliffhanger that is resolved in a Teen Titans/Outsiders crossover book called "The Insiders." That book is MUCH better. "Wanted" is worth buying if you're planning to get "Insiders." Otherwise, have fun with Vols. 1 & 2 and skip this one.

Maybe the best one written

Maybe the best one written. Shortly after this they lost their visuals guy, and the writing went the same sad direction as the art. If you read outsiders a year or two after this, it is brief, farcical, and silly in a bizarre way that someone fails to be entertaining. This is dark, heavy, emotional, and high quality writing for a team of superheroes that manage to be both super and human.

Great Read

I gotta say that I'm getting to be huge fan of Winick's writing. This team book has all the great elements that will keep me coming back to it over and over (it's even earned a place on my bookshelf, as opposed to the comic box in my closet). The characters are fully realised people, not just two dimensional archetypes, and the humor is just dry enough to get an audible chuckle out of me.

Keep 'em coming, Mr Winick.
