A sad disturbing tale
By readybear75219
I read "Go Ask Alice" over 30 years ago when I was a teenager, and I had to sneak it because my folks said I couldn't read it. Had to sneak a copy. I'm glad I did though it scared the hell out of me, and I knew I didn't want to get mixed up w/anything or anyone doing drugs. "Scared straight" guess you could say. Had never read "Jay's Journal" so decided to revisit "Alice" again as well. Now as an adult "Alice" was just as sad, disturbing & powerful as it was 30+ years ago, and "Jay" as well. Not everyone's cup of tea I'm sure but both have strong messages, and I recommend reading them - not for titillation but as something to learn from.

outside: gorgeous, inside: traumatizing
By Kaneko
i have one complaint: my box set came damaged. a corner of Ask Alice got stuck inside a tab or whatever inside the box, and I couldn't pull it nor Jay's Journal out because of it. When I eventually did get it out, the corner was torn and wrinkled. Being a book lover, this highly upset me. Aside from that though, this box set is absolutely AMAZING. Go Ask Alice kept me mesmerized throughout the scenes, and it's descriptions of the drug effects are very vivid and real. Jay's Journal, though it received a lot of criticism for not being the true story, was a good read. It was not only educational, but also entertaining and almost as mesmerizing as Go Ask Alice. Both are incredible books that are very well written and perfect for anybody like me who is interested in reading about the effect of drugs from the eyes of fellow teens.

Timeless Life Lessons
By Leo 69
Go Ask Alice & Jay's Journal are a must read for both parents and impressionable girls and boys alike. These books allow a look into the peer pressures of adolescents. I first read Go ask Alice when I was in middle school many years ago. When I re-read it as an adult and mother of two girls I came away with a different perspective into the mind set of adolescents and the pressures they are under to fit in and belong. It also allowed me to reflect on my own adolescents and how I over come the pressures of using drugs and alcohol as a teenager.

Necropolis: London and Its Dead, by Catharine Arnold

Above, a city thriving with life. Beneath, a city filled with the dead.

London. A vast, labyrinthine, ever-moving place that shimmers as the jewel of Britain. But what about beneath it? What of it's history? It's mishaps? It's dead?

Catharine Arnold invites us on a gloriously macabre tour - across London's many graveyards, cemeteries and burial plots in a quest to discover whether what has departed can teach us anything about what is to come. It's an intriguing, occasionally dark, occasionally humorous journey that reaches right back to the Romans and concludes with the most recent display of mass public mourning: Princess Diana's funeral.

Utilising archaeology, anthropology, anecdote and history, Arnold explores the presence of death in people's lives and the developments and changes in mourning and burial through two millennia. London's greatest disasters, including the Great Fire and the Black Plague, are explored and analysed for their massive impacts on both the population and the change in the disposal of the dead, while the unusual resting places of several thousand Londoners are highlighted and studied, as a means of examining growth and city development. Implicitly entwined with the passing of generations is the transformation of an entire population; where and how people live, where and how they die, and where their children move on to. Arnold marvellously celebrates the possibilities of living in a city as large as London and sensitively demonstrates how much modern citizens owe to their ancestors.

Filled with beautiful details, such as the reason we wear black to funerals (Romans believed the colour made mourners invisible to vengeful spirits), and in an optimistic and respectful voice, Arnold brings us a unique history of one of the world's greatest cities - built atop centuries of history and still rising to this day. If you've ever wondered where the sweet hereafter might be, then look no further - Arnold shows us beautifully how even in a city as massive as London, the dead never really leave us.

Very Interesting!
By Michael P. Williams, Esq.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. Ms. Arnold's phenomenal research and attention to detail is tremendous! Many of the book's histories and facts are RIVETING! The book, unfortunately, contains a few cumbersome and/or extremely slowly moving passages, which compelled me to put the book down for a while. I, nevertheless, am happy to have read this book, and I am most certainly much more familiar with London's entombment history.

Interesting and a bit technical but fascinating. London is ...
By Paulette Buongirno
Interesting and a bit technical but fascinating. London is an old city but to think it was built on top of a several cemeteries is fascinating. The next time I visit I will be watching where I am walking. The concept of building on top of cemeteries is not new because as populations increased land does not. Some civilizations moved the bodies if there was room but others just added layers. Archeologists can learn a lot about history because of this.

Dead bodies under your feet
By Mercedes Rochelle
Necropolis is one of those fascinating books that one reads with a sort of guilty pleasure, treading over remains of the dead long gone and not pleasantly remembered. There is so much territory to be covered (so to speak) that it's hard to take it all in. But the predominate impression I came away with is that London was one vast cemetery, with buildings and parks and parking lots constructed over a millenia's worth of corpses.

In my naivete, I never gave much thought to the question of what happened to old bodies until my visit to Pere LaChaise, when I saw that they were recycling an old empty-looking vault. Of course...once the remains have disintegrated, why not re-use the precious real estate? What I didn't realize was that for centuries, people thought of their burial spot (especially in a churchyard) as leased space. They did not expect to rest in peace until the Judgment Day; they were content to occupy a plot until their body decomposed and made room for the next corpse. Apparently under normal circumstances, a person was happy to get a good 10 years in a churchyard. But as the population grew and the space was at a premium, the resting period grew shorter and shorter until bodies were being exhumed before they even had a chance to fully decompose. Where did all the throw-away bodies get dumped?

This is where the comprehension starts to break down, at least in my mind. Perhaps it just wasn't well documented, but in the reading I was stymied by the contemplation of tens of thousands of dug up bodies and coffins being carted away to somewhere. The author made it clear that Catacombs were not widely used, especially in the Middle Ages. Burning of remains created riots (in the early days), so that was not an option. I would like to have known how they dealt with this problem, but the book's concentration was on finding and creating new graveyards, while diverting the populace's attention away from overcrowded churchyards. Of course, there were also the many plagues, which overtaxed an already delicate situation.

The attitude of people toward death in the Middle Ages was much more pragmatic than our own, and it seems that the cult of death really took a turn during the 19th century. The last 2/3 of the book covered the Victorians and later, where we see the growth of the whole funeral industry up to its most extreme (and expensive) excesses. Grand new cemeteries were built outside the city by landscape architects designed to be enjoyed by the living; specially constructed trains carried mourners great distances to the funerals that took place in the adjoining chapels. World War I put an end to the showy funerals and extended mourning periods, as suddenly there were no bodies to bury (if the dearly departed was a soldier), and not enough time to waste on extravagant shows of grief.

This interesting book gives us many anecdotal examples of related issues, such as body snatchers and suicides, abuses and putrefaction beneath chapel floors, the development of cremation. Although it left a lot of questions unanswered, Necropolis proved a good read from beginning to end.

The Artists of Nathadwara: The Practice of Painting in Rajasthan, by Tryna Lyons

In this beautifully illustrated study, Tryna Lyons combines ethnographic and art historical methods to examine the work and careers of artists in Nathadwara, Rajasthan, India. The religious pilgrimage center of Nathadwara is home to a large community of traditional artists, who retain sketchbooks and other materials handed down in their families for generations. The old sketchbooks, still used to teach younger generations and to provide established artists with ideas, reveal the connection between contemporary practice and the historical antecedents of the Nathadwara school of painting. Lyons’s innovative approach focuses on analysis of the sketchbooks of five artists active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reproduced here in detail alongside full-color reproductions of their work and related images. The sketchbooks reveal personal style and innovation, demonstrating the array of choices open to artists in a time of cultural ferment and excitement. A section on women artists documents the careers of successful female exponents of the Nathadwara style. Appendixes include a glossary and a collection of artists’ genealogies, some stretching back 17 generations, recording significant information on artistic activities, commissions, and patronage. The Artists of Nathadwara should make us question Orientalist assumptions about tradition and the anonymity of South Asian artisans.

Review

"... This text provides myriad rewards for careful readers willing to accompany Lyons on her sometimes painstaking, but always faithful, illuminating, and deeply evocative journey into a period and place of unexpected creativity." —American Anthropologist, June 2008

(American Anthropologist 2008-01-00)

"Scholarly and well illustrated.... Recommended." —Library Journal

(Library Journal)

"Indepedent scholar Lyons reconstructed more than 15 years of the history of artisan families who practiced in the pilgrimage town of Nathadwara since the 19th century.... The author's style is informal and easy to read.... A unique book for students of Indian studies. Recommended." —Choice

(Choice)

"Delving into hard-to-find, hard-to-access, and hard-to-read records... Lyons has brought an enormous amount of new material to light from previously unknown sketchbooks, to her findings on women artists, to her extraordinary tracings of painter family history. She has made these artists too present to ignore, and many of our assumptions will have to make way to accommodate them." —caa.reviews

(caa.reviews)

"I thoroughly recommend this beautifully produced book to anyone interested in the development and practise of Indian painting as well as the lives of the painters." —Anne-Marie Gaston, Carleton University, Ethnologies, Volume 29, Number 1-2, 2007

(Anne-Marie Gaston, Carleton University Ethnologies 2007-01-00)

"Though this book is a delight to look through, and the text pleasantly light and welcoming to both scholar and general reader, there are important issues working under the surface of The Artists of Nathadwara: the face-off between folk art and traditional high culture; the presence in the artists' self-image of an imposed European aesthetic; artistic integrity and individualism within a system of religious patronage. Lyons does not so much evade these issues as nod gracefully to acknowledge them, then return to her exposition of the artists and the objects they produced." —Diane Johnson, Western Washington University, JRNL AMERICAN ORIENTAL SOCIETY ANE, Oct.-Dec. 2007

(Diane Johnson, Western Washington University JRNL AMERICAN ORIENTAL SOCIETY ANE 2007-01-00)

"The Artists of Nathadwara is a rich and beautifully rendered consideration of the work and lives of artists inhabiting the pilgrimage center of Nathadwara (Rajasthan, India) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries." —Jeffrey G. Snodgrass, Colorado State University, AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST, Vol. 110.2 June 2008

(Jeffrey G. Snodgrass, Colorado State University AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST 2008-01-00)

"Tryna Lyons’s The Artists of Nathadwara vividly renders a community of traditional painters. It brings to life a profession that the field of South Asian art studies has tended to sidestep in its focus on objects... By interviewing living artists from Nathadwara and studying late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Nathadwara painters whose notebooks exist and whose descendents remember them, Lyons finally turns the field of Indian painting studies toward the artists’ perspectives, with the result that we begin to see the painter’s profession in a very different light." —caa.reviews

Exquisite study of a little-known sacred art
By Aimee Brant
This book is a thoroughgoing, well-rounded study of the artists of Nathadwara town in Rajasthan, India, and of their various art productions and practices: a rigorous and innovative ethnography of living and deceased painters and painting in the Pushtimarg tradition of Vaisnavism. The book design is a delight, with its miniature drawings from Nathadwara art motifs placed on the pages and also at the end of each chapter, plus the beautifully printed color (and B&W) illustrations-a true feast for the eyes.

In her Introduction the author situates the art in relation to previous scholarship, then briefly surveys the history of Pushtimarg and how it became settled in Rajasthan, the role of the picchavai in this tradition, the question of whether it is art or folk art, and the scope of the study.

The next nine chapters intensively discuss the following topics: Mural paintings by Nathadwara artists; artists' workshops at turn-of-the-century; a glimpse of the temple in old Bombay based on an artist's sketchbook; artist families as frameworks for the evolution of style; an artist's eye to the future as exemplified in a sketchbook; the influence of British stylistics on an England-returned master artist; the women artists of Nathadwara; artists' histories and myths of caste and kin and location, and the genealogists who maintain and also invent them to please their patrons; and a conclusion that surveys issues of religion in relation to art and life in Nathadwara, artist views on aesthetic excellence, and younger artists' experimentation with other kinds of painting.

Throughout her in-depth examination of art and art making based on interviews, photographing art on location, studying rare artist sketchbooks, and extensive travels to important sites in and away from Nathadwara, the author reveals the many ways in which the artists of Nathadwara experience and fulfill their religious devotion in their works.

I highly recommend this beautiful as well as impressive book as a resource for Vaisnava studies as well as for historians of traditional arts on the Indian sub-continent.

Polygon Mesh Processing, by Mario Botsch, Leif Kobbelt, Mark Pauly, Pierre Alliez, Bruno Levy

Geometry processing, or mesh processing, is a fast-growing area of research that uses concepts from applied mathematics, computer science, and engineering to design efficient algorithms for the acquisition, reconstruction, analysis, manipulation, simulation, and transmission of complex 3D models. Applications of geometry processing algorithms already cover a wide range of areas from multimedia, entertainment, and classical computer-aided design, to biomedical computing, reverse engineering, and scientific computing.

Over the last several years, triangle meshes have become increasingly popular, as irregular triangle meshes have developed into a valuable alternative to traditional spline surfaces. This book discusses the whole geometry processing pipeline based on triangle meshes. The pipeline starts with data input, for example, a model acquired by 3D scanning techniques. This data can then go through processes of error removal, mesh creation, smoothing, conversion, morphing, and more. The authors detail techniques for those processes using triangle meshes.

Wonderful introduction to the topic, great as a reference after
By Martin Wicke
I originally bought this book because I had a specific question about bi-Laplacian smoothing. The book answered that question fine, so I was happy. I continued to read. The book is a pleasant read.

The bibliography is complete and for people already familiar with the material, makes this book a great reference. I am no stranger to polygon mesh processing, but I have given the book to a number of people who are, for whom is obviously has been a great introduction (they clearly know what they are talking about after they have read it). I believe this book would probably be a good textbook for a class on the subject.

I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about mesh processing, or who, like me, forgets things and has to look them up.

Always near me
By Mathieu Lamarre
If you missed Siggraphs 2000 to 2010, many mesh processing innovations are clearly reviewed in this small book.

Better than on-line papers and wikipedia? Yes! To converge quickly on the right mesh processing algorithm for a task this book is perfect.

Can't wait for 2nd edition with new innovations and perhaps a section on parallel and distributed versions of some algorithms.

Very good book on mesh processing techniques
By dongz
Very good book on mesh processing techniques. Structure of the book is very well organized (although I feel, adding a chapter for mesh generation would be more helpful to the current material). Covered a lot hot topics currently going on in the relevant fields and reviewed some interesting research results. Highly recommend to be an introductory book for people planning to work on those topics.

Authors Scott Appelrouth and Laura Desfor Edles combine original texts, edited for classroom use, with extensive framing discussions that provide crucial biographical, historical, and theoretical context for readings. I would have to agree with another person's review that they didn't have many feminist theorists like they should have
By Annie
This was a book selected by my professor for a Sociology course during summer semester. I was excited to read this book but with summer courses being faster paced I found it a bit challenging to grasp some of the material. What material I did grasp was truly interesting. I would have to agree with another person's review that they didn't have many feminist theorists like they should have. Regardless it was a very interesting book and I would recommend it to anyone who is truly interested in the Sociology field.

This is a very hard to understand and follow along with text. Typically text books are not something that we can choose whether or not we want to read. Some times I think its worth buying a text book rather than renting it as I may want to reference it later. This is not the case with this book. I dislike it very much and would not buy it if I had the chance.
