Absurd person singular is top

In our opinion " Absurd person singular " is worth four stars. The relationships of the three couples are presented in a very funny way. The main characters are exaggerated very much. That's why the comedy is funny as well as critical. There is Marion for example who behaves in avery theatrical way, and Jane who is obsessed with cleaning. The reader is disillusioned about marriages and friendships because he realizes that marriages and even friendships aren't always as positive and easy as they first appear to be. Eva's saying:" My existence ended the day he married me " shows this fact in a very clear way. Another aspect is that the reader doesn't really identify with those characters because only types are presented which makes us see the characters critically.

This book is simply three of Ayckbourn's better known plays - essentially the scripts for each of them. In Abusurd Person Singular, the play unfolds over three successive Christmases in the kitchens of three couples; a young couple with a philandering husband, an older middle class gent and his wife, and then the well meaning but to the others awful up and coming property developer. Absent Friends unfolds over afternoon tea where friends gather to console a recent widower over his wife's death by accidential drowning. Socially gormless, the widower exposes simmering tensions and disaffections, leaving them by the end unintentionally but hilariously much the worse for his visit. Bedroom Farce is one of Ayckbourn's best and most well known plays. The set is three bedrooms; a party in one, an invalid in another, and the parents of a guest at the party in the third. Mayhem unfolds as party guests arrive early and a bickering couple resort to blows. Meanwhile, the action hops between the other bedrooms as amongst it all the meaning of true love struggles to explain itself. The plays are short and easy to read, a trove of technique for ambitious writers or anyone interested in theatre. Well worth reading.

Interesting group of plays by Ayckbourne. For me the best one is first and the second is next. Reading the three together one learns a bit about Ayckbourne's continuing themes, selection of characters and playwrighting techniques. It is interesting to realize how very serious much of the writing is when on stage the plays perform as great farces and comedies. Quite a good learning experience.

About the Author
Professor "James W. Nilsson" taught at Iowa State University for 39 years. Since retiring from Iowa State, he has been a visiting professor at Notre Dame, California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo, and the United States Air Force Academy. In 1962, he co-authored (with R.G. Brown) "Introduction to Linear Systems Analysis" (John Wiley & Sons). In 1968, he authored "Introduction to Circuits, Instruments, and Electronics" (Harcourt Brace and World). Professor Nilsson received a Standard Oil Outstanding Teacher Award in 1968, the IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1992, and the McGraw-Hill Jacob Millman Award in 1995. In 1990, he was elected to the rank of Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Professor "Susan A. Riedel" has been a member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Marquette University since 1981. She also holds a clinical research appointment in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and was a visiting professor in the Bioengineering Unit at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, as a Fulbright Scholar during the 1989-1999 academic year. She has received two awards for teaching excellence at Marquette, and was recognized for her research contributions with an award from the Chicago Unit of the Shriner's Hospitals.

Ronald Kahan, MD, a sought-after health care lecturer and consultant, is an associate clinical professor at Yale Medical School and has practiced medicine for more than thirty years. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his MD from Weill-Cornell Medical College, and went on to conduct his residency at Harvard combined hospitals, specializing in dermatology.

An Invaluable Resourse

GE recently terminated its group health plan for its retirees much to the chagrin of my wife and me. We were both covered under this plan. We were given a minor stipend and were directed to purchase supplemental Medicare health insurance through OneExchange (a TowersWatson company). IBM did the same thing several years ago so there is an unmistakable trend here. All of a sudden, I had to become an expert on purchasing supplemental Medicare insurance including Part D drug coverage. Fortunately, I know Dr. Ronald Kahan and I immediately purchased his book. In very short order, I became quite an expert on Medicare and the benefits and shortcomings of the myriad of supplemental plans that one can purchase. I found Dr. Kahan's book to be extremely informative and helpful. He explained a very complex subject in plain and clear terms. In fact, in dealing with the licensed Benefits Advisors at OneExchange, they were surprised that I knew so much about Medicare and the various supplemental plans. The knowledge that I gained from Medicare Demystified will continue to serve me well in future years. This book is an invaluable resource.

Good for Your Health

Full of useful information and devoid of political spin, Medicare Demystified delivers fully on the promise of it's title. In less than 250 pages of well-researched and understandable prose and tables, Dr. Kahan translates and distills thousands of pages of regulatory and marketing doublespeak into a must-have manual for all those impacted by this important national health insurance program. Of particular value is the division of the book into two parts: 1)choosing the best plan, 2)using your plan wisely. As a fellow physician, I truly appreciate the work the author has done to bring light and understanding to this complex subject at a time when 10,000 Americans are turning 65 and becoming Medicare eligible every day.

An outstanding book, especially for someone who will be signing up for Medicare

This book is superb and does exactly what the title says, i.e., simplify a confusing subject. It provides essential information for a Medicare beneficiary and is a must-read for anyone who is approaching the time to sign up for Medicare. While thorough in its coverage of the subject, it is well-written and gets to important points directly, making it an easy read. The book is divided into 2 parts: “Choosing Your Medicare Plan” and “Using Your Medicare Plan”. The first part covers subjects such as who qualifies for Medicare; how to sign-up for Medicare; and the differences between Medicare Part A (e.g., hospital coverage), Medicare Part B (e.g., physicians’ fees), Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage plans run by private insurance companies), and Medicare Part D (drug plans). The second part covers how to use Medicare, touching on subjects such as why it’s important to have a PCP (primary care physician), how to find a new doctor, the difference between skilled nursing facilities and custodial nursing homes, and how to understand the EOBs (explanation of benefits) that Medicare beneficiaries receive after medical services are utilized. Although I am a physician and have some familiarity with Medicare, I learned many important things that make the book well worth its price (e.g., the significant long-term increase in what a person will have to pay for Medicare coverage if Medicare is not signed up for during the appropriate time frame) . In writing this book, Dr. Kahan has done an invaluable service for anyone who needs to know more about Medicare.

Delivers as promised

Book is an excellent introduction to research design for qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods designs. It explains all the components of a research design and walks you through each one, inclding the literature review, research question and hypotheses. Also, the first chapter goes through the different theoretical perspectives from which reseach proceeds, so you can understand the different paradigms. It also has lots of models, examples and exercises to work through. I used this book for a research proposal, and it guided me through the whole thing. The proposal was well accepted. So, I definately recommend this for any student to learn about research or anyone interested in putting together a good proposal, or an instructor who wants a good core text.

Grad student reference

Used this text in my grad course on the physics of the Early Universe. Couples with Dodelson, Hartle, and Caroll, it makes a great reference.

Not a recommendable book

The first chapter of this book deals with General Relativity which is a fundamental tool for anyone doing research in Cosmology. However, a quick look on these pages stopped me from further reading and I simply dropped the book. Indeed, the authors invent an anti-symmetry of the Christoffel symbols which simply does not exist. Equations 1.38 in the French edition is plainly wrong. I insist that it is NOT A MISPRINT. They use this nonexistent anti-symmetry to 'calculate' the Lie derivative of the metric tensor, eq 1.57 (something which can, of course, be done by honest means) A first year student could see this if we were not in a time where buzz and show off and the weight of paper spoiled are all so much more important than reflection and thoughtful writing.
I don't know if they use their nonexistent anti-symmetry to 'prove' other true or wrong theorems. I simply lost all confidence in the value of what followed. Who would trust an accountant writing that 3x2 = 5 ? You wouldn't ? Then forget that book.
