Contemporary Projects for Needlepoint & Cross Stitch

It’s a rare modern cross stitch book that can make the transition to needlepoint as easily and beautifully as Big Cross Stitch does. In fact, if you saw the cover picture without the title you’d probably think it was needlepoint.

That’s because much modern cross stitch uses several things that don’t translate to needlepoint very well, namely: lots of colors, outlining, and partial stitches. In this book we find bold designs without the detail of outlining, relatively few colors, and whole stitches.

Besides these things, the designs completely cover the ground, unlike most cross stitch and they are stitched in a familiar material– tapestry wool.

Look inside and you’ll find that the designs are all stitched on 7-count needlepoint canvas (rug or quickpoint canvas), using a strand of tapestry wool, with only a few using cross stitch fabrics. It’s a larger ground, and more contemporary designs, but this is the same stitch and yarn used in Elizabeth Bradley kits.

In fact, in her introduction, Pearce says that these designs can all be done as needlepoint. She explains that her big cross stitch technique is a hybrid of needlepoint and cross stitch.

There are 30 projects in all ranging from a small change purse to a Christmas tree skirt. Each project is introduced with a full-page picture plus a smaller detail picture. A box called ‘stitch stats’ has the stitch count, thread, ground (called base), and skill level. The skill levels are consistent throughout the book an are defined in the first section. The first page for each project also has a material list (with amounts) and the method to complete stitching the project.

Following this you will find a full-color chart, color key, and finishing instructions. Also on these pages are some ideas for variations in making the project.

My only problem with the book is that many of the charts cover two pages. Often this can cause problems, but these charts are large and the book opens enough, so that no part is lost in the binding.

The final chapter, Stitching School, covers the basics from thread coverage to basic stitching techniques. There is also a color conversion charts that uses both symbols and names and lists colors in Appleton, DMC floss, and Anchor floss. It ends with finishing instructions for a variety of items.

I love the designs in this book. They are bright without looking childish, modern but modern that is a twist on the traditional. It’s a great resource for easy-to-complete projects that deserves a spot on your shelf.

Baldacci scores again.

Baldacci has written more than a dozen best sellers.He ranks with Grisham for me as America's best mystery writer. This ranks among his very best. This recollection of his mother's grandmother is the best book I read this year. An oral historian myself, I have been motivated to write mother's story as well as my own. This book would be ideal for study groups, especially if they are the least interested in oral history. This particular edition does not include the discussion guid and oral history directions in the original paperback available at Barnes and Noble. I am giving the book to all my dearest friends for Christmas. I am happy to see there is a school edition. I would have used this when teaching my students to collect and write their oral histories.

This book is a MUST HAVE for all drummers!

You don't have to be a drummer to appreciate the beautiful photography and in-depth artist bios in "Sticks 'n' Skins", but if you ARE a drummer, you'll definitely want to own this book! Jules Follett and Jamie Pastor have done an outstanding job capturing the spirit of drummers of all styles, playing drums and the drumming community, in this book. There is also a section dedicated to photographer Lissa Wales, who the drumming community lost in 2005. Lissa was loved by everyone in the drumming community and her work is memorialized in a beautiful tribute at the front of the book.

It also includes behind the scenes photos from Drum Industry events such as PASIC, the Modern Drummer Festival, Montreal Drumfest, The 2008 Zildjian Drummers Achievement Awards and NAMM, as well as the movers and shakers within the Drum Industry. I received my copy in October and still haven't read it from cover to cover - there's just so much in it! You really need to own this book!

This is a must check-out coffee table photography book for every drummer and fans of drums & drummers! Photographer Jules Follett and her Fotos By Folletts team have captured the personality of over 500 drummers (I am truly honored to be a small part of this amazing accomplishment) Not only are there amazing photos by Jules and company, also included are legendary shots by the late Lissa Wales. (Lissa was very well known & loved in the drumming community and left us too soon) It's very special & touching that Jules has dedicated the opening pages to Lissa with a special tribute to her photos. For The Drummer In Your Heart

This beautiful book of photography truly speaks to the drummer in your heart. Each page contains an enlightening glimpse into the world of one person's unique story of his or her passion for the instrument of the drum and/or drum set. Over 400 drummers are included, and while you may possibly be able to think of a few who do not grace a page, you just know all are included thanks to the overwhelming sense of community and brotherhood represented through the author's humbling approach. Jules Follett has not only accomplished a task far beyond vision with this amazingly well crafted "coffee table book of drummers," but she has gracefully dedicated the entire work to the memory of yet another photographer whom she only knew as her Guardian Angel... Lissa Wales, and included a complete section with some of Lissa's special timeless moments with more keepers of time. Congratulations to Jules on an adventure well taken, and to all who are fortunate enough to spend time enjoying its blessed contents. Anyone who has even a hint of a drummer in your heart will surely treasure this historical work of art for years to come.

About the Author
RAVI ZACHARIAS is founder and chairman of the board of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, headquartered in Atlanta. Dr. Zacharias and his wife, Margie, have three grown children.
DR. VINCE VITALE, born in NYC, went to study philosophy at Princeton University, and there took an unexpected journey that led him to God. He now teaches at Wycliffe Hall of Oxford University, is Senior Tutor at the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, and is a speaker for RZIM.

You could fill a library with the books on this subject, but in my opinion, there is none better than this one

We ask it every day. We ask it in the big things and the small things. We ask it when our world implodes around us and when we explode into our world. It is a universal question asked in every human language and guttural moan imaginable. It is asked the world over, from the richest to the poorest, from the East to the West, from ancient times to our modern days. It is a question inherent to our being, the answer to which provides the answer for our ontological longing.

Why Suffering?

Zacharias begin the book by elaborating on the question. What it is the people mean when they ask this question? How are we supposed to answer? Among other things, he develops the difference between the intellectual question and the personal question. In other words, the beginnings of an answer lie in why the question is being asked. Is this just another intellectual exercise for a skeptic or have they recently been through a tragic loss. Zacharias suggests that while the problem of evil can be discussed philosophically, it is usually best answered pastorally.

From this introduction, Zacharias and Vitale trade chapters on various responses to the problem of suffering. Space prohibits a full analysis, so suffice it to say that Zacharias writes on the responses of freedom and morality while Vitale writes about grace, the Cross, and hope. Zacharias also writes a magnificent chapter midway through that compares the Christian answer to the answers from Buddhism, Islam, and naturalism.

Every chapter in the book is a goldmine. I suggest you take just over a week to read this book and focus on one chapter a day. Let the material sink it, grapple with it, think through it, and incorporate it into your own life.

One thing to note: Ravi and Vince could not have more different writing styles. Ravi’s writes the way he speaks, with such precision and clarity that I can hear the lilt of his voice in my head as I read his thoughts. Vince’s writing is more rugged and conversational and also fits his own personality and speaking tone. It’s jarring, at times, if you read more than one chapter at a time, but does not affect the quality of the book.

You could fill a library with the books on this subject, but in my opinion, there is none better for the average reader than what Zacharias and Vitale offer here. Clear, simply stated answers confirmed through a wealth of resources. Everyone needs to read this book because everyone deals with this question. Do yourself and those around you a favor and pick it up now.

A brilliant mix of deep thought and personal insight to tackle this challenging question

The question of why there is suffering in this world is a difficult one, and a personal one for many, but in "Why Suffering?" the authors address this thorny issue with a wonderful balance of considered thought, studied Philosophy, and personal insight. The authors write in a warm and easily readable tone, while still taking the topic seriously and considering it from a number of angles.

Whether you are someone struggling through suffering yourself, someone supporting a friend through a difficult time, a Christian wanting to know how faith answers this difficult question, or an agnostic wanting to see whether the claims of religion stand up in the face of evil: this well-considered, intellectually rigorous, and deeply insightful book is a must read.

One of the most helpful and thought provoking books I have read in a long time.

I couldn't stop eating this book!

Why Suffering? is a relatively small book (229 pages) that is crammed full of very large questions and even larger answers. Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale each offer several chapters that respond to the contention that “if there really is a loving God, there would be no pain and suffering in the world.”
While the topics of logic and reason may not be at the top of anyone's “Conversation Starters” list, the authors use both to provide intellectual answers to emotional questions. They differentiate between logic and reason, making clear that “using logic as a test for truth and reasoning does not always result in the same implications of what is true...It is imperative that we understand not only the logical problem that is being presented but the reasoning process that we are bringing to bear upon this very important question.”
Almost every page of the book prompts highlighting nuggets that bear further study; they make you want to call your study partner to share an “aha” discovery.
Whether you are a Christian or a skeptic or a seeker, this book will provide you with hours of inspiration and many interesting topics for conversation.

Daphne du Mauier is an absolutely beautiful writer who is very easy to read

Daphne du Mauier is an absolutely beautiful writer who is very easy to read. If you want to get into modern classics she is definately a good place to start.

The premise and set up of this book was absolutely great. You are quickly sucked into this mysterious world of gangsters and dread. I could actually feel myself walking through the forests and sitting inside Jamaica Inn. It is a medium paced story and I was never bored and interested throughout the novel.

The reason why I gave this a 3 star read was because I figured out the mystery while I was reading it. This could be perhaps because I do read quite a lot. I also didn't love a part of the ending with respect to the main character and her love interest.

I really do feel that she gave up so much of herself to be with a person that frankly didn't treat her too well or just wasn't giving her the things that she wanted in life. It seemed too whimsical and fluttery of you ask me.

Overall it was a great book and I definitely recommend reading it especially if you like atmospheric books where you can get completely lost in.

A classic. Perfect for fans of DuMaurier

Jamaica Inn by the English writer Daphne du Maurier is a classic. The story begins with 20 year-old Mary Yellan making her way to Jamaica Inn in a horse drawn coach, the darkness of the moors and the beating rain making her very anxious.

Mary lived on a farm in Helford but had to leave after her mother died. As she was dying she asked Mary to go live with her Aunt Patience at Jamaica Inn. The journey to her aunt is anything but comforting.

Upon arrival Mary finds her aunt a different person fro the sparkling, witty laughing woman she remembered. Aunt Patience seems aged 50 years and mutters constantly. She is clearly frightened of something and Mary comes to realize very quickly what, or shall I say who, is the reason. Mary’s Uncle Joss is a wicked man and he has illegal business affairs right there at the inn.

The plot follows a group of murderous wreckers, Joss seemingly one who is in charge. They run ships aground using lanterns on the shore and kill the sailors then steal the cargo. Jamaica Inn is never open to the public yet every few weeks men come in the dark of the night, silently unloading carts of merchandise they have stolen from the wrecked ships.

Mary foolishly becomes attracted to Joss’s younger brother, Jem. She realizes Jem does not have anything to do with her uncle’s murderous business although he is a horse thief.

One day Mary decides to track her uncle across the moors so she can report the lot of them to the law. But it gets dark earlier than she thought it would and Mary is stranded, cold and wet and alone in the dark. Miraculously a horse drawn buggy comes along and she is rescued. Francis Davey, an albino vicar who lives in the next village, picks Mary up and takes her to his home. She tells the vicar the improbable tale of her uncle’s business expecting him to help her. He instead points out some weak points in her story and suggests she is letting her imagination get away from her.

There is much more but if you haven’t read Du Maurier’s classic, I don’t want to give away the rest of the story. Soon I would like to read her other popular book, Rebecca.

What would you like to eat if you were arriving on a damp, cold wintery evening to a near deserted inn on the moors? I would want a hot brisket dinner and loads of tea! That's what I was inspired to prepare after reading this book. (Photos are on my website)

We open the story with Mary Yellan making a journey in dreary weather to the Jamaica Inn, which just the name of incites fear in the surrounding area. Mary would have never chosen this life for herself but it was her mother's dying wish that Mary move off the farm and in with her Aunt Patience. Upon arriving at her new residence she notices her Aunt is not as happy and beautiful as she remembered. Rather Aunt Patience is ragged and cowers in fear of her husband, Joss Merlyn. What exactly is Aunt Patience afraid of and what are the secrets behind the mysterious Jamaica Inn.

I quite enjoyed the book though at times it seemed terribly slow. The characters all had distinct personalities which Du Maurier did a wonderful job of displaying throughout the book. While not exactly a scary story it holds your interest as you try to figure out just what is going on at the inn. My only complaints were the slowness in parts of the book and that the twist wasn't exactly surprising. Though there being a surprise isn't a requirement when a book is written as well as this was.

Good topics but jumpy writing

This was assigned reading for an ethics business class. Good topics and examples. The writing style is jumpy and not fluid. The author condemns lay-offs as a business tactic. It contains a lot of theories for ethical behavior. It was short (127 pages) and worth the read.

The book Ethics in the Workplace is a superbly written book that is insightful, illuminating, and introspective and clearly relevant in today's world.
The author writes about the development ethic that is the individual's search for truth and beauty as well as what is good and rewarding for one's self. It is an artistic composite of the author's thoughts on how man couches himself in a world that is fraught with incoherent motives and inconsistent goals. Especially in the world today where business is conducted among individuals with diverse motives, this book provides one's soul with warmth and envelopes one's being in a thought provoking and soul inspiring way. It is not so much our attainment of our goals that is critical to realizing our fullest individual potentials, rather it is the means by which we seek our goals that is important and meaningful. How we search for ourselves through rewarding work and career positions is as equally important as the rewards and positions themselves.
This book is responsive to man's dilemma in the world today where the meaning of work, friendships, and life itself is sometimes distorted by the trappings of the workplace. Exciting, warm, and thoughtful, the book Ethics in the Workplace provides a new perspective of man's place in the modern world!

This is not a "business ethics" textbook

The author has little grasp of the subtleties and nuances of standard ethical theories. And the claim that "systems analysis" can be used as a method of ethical deliberation, essentially supplanting those theories, is, in effect, an endorsement of ethical relativism. For a better introduction to "ethics in the workplace", and a more thorough and comprehensive one, see Richard T. De George's "Business Ethics". For a very good critical introduction to "values in the workplace", see Gerald F. Cavanagh's American Business Values".

Favorite text book for my Org Comm class

Miller writes in a very easy-to-ready everyday vernacular, and clearly connects her arguments. This book links major concepts in organizational communication in a manner that makes each argument more cogent and easy to understand. Sidebars include examples that connect the material to real-world examples.

I especially appreciate how she writes about concepts outside of the general topic of Organizational Communication; the class I got this book for is an elective outside of my major in Organizational Development, and I recognized portions of the material from my Systems Dynamics class. I feel that this gives the book an excellent "global" perspective of the issues at play.

Really good book and one I will keep. Even though I have my BA now this is great book to keep to go back over information. Great for anyone to understand how people work in organizations and interact. Its helpful when starting a job or if one is a manager. Just a great book and easy to read and understand. As I work with people this is a winner. It is also helping me re-enter the work force as an older woman.

About the Author
Moorad Choudhry is Head of Treasury at KBC Financial Products UK Limited in London. He previously worked as a government bond trader at ABN Amro Hoare Govett Limited and Hambros Bank Limited, and in structured finance with JPMorgan Chase Bank.
Moorad is a Visiting Professor at the Department of Economics, London Metropolitan University, and a Fellow of the Securities Institute in the City of London. He is co-editor with Professor Frank Fabozzi of The Handbook of European Fixed Income Securities.

Great practitioner's guide

This is an extensive book written from the practitioner's viewpoint; consequently, it is a lot more useful than a textbook for those looking for real world applications that they may readily implement in their day-to-day. Additionally, the appendixes constitute a great review of tools and techniques for any fixed-income person. My only caution is that there are some mistakes and/or internal inconsistencies in the examples used, where the data in the formulas does not match the information in the discussion, which can make it frustrating to follow. Additionally, if the reader is not proficient in fixed income math and curve building he/she may not be able to ascertain where the errors are. The book is a good introduction to students, but an even better reference source for experienced operators and fixed income number crunchers. Overall, an excellent reference book for the real world practitioner.

P.S. The author has since issue a new revised edition that corrected many of the errors and inconsistencies I mentioned above. The author was graceful enough to establish and exchange of correspondence with me to discuss my comments and more graceful still to send me a copy of the revised book. A class act by any standard!

Essential Reading for every Market Practitioner

"Bank Asset and Liability Management" builds on the brilliant book "The Bond & Money Market, Strategy, Trading, Analysis" also by Professor Choudhry, by providing even more examples of actual trades and situations. His books are not written to drown people with Mathematics, but actually provide real examples in a clear and concise manner. Both books have a very easy to follow format, though with the Bloomberg Screen shots and CD provided in this book it is probably the one to choose. Every postgrad course on a Banks Treasury function should consider this book as their text, and at the same time, every practitioner should have a copy of this book on their desk .... I can't understand why more books aren't like this .... simple, explanatory and practical!

Great book for practitioners

Great book for practitioners. I love Choudhry's style and clariy. I prefer it way better over Fabozzi. one can clearly see the difference between someone with industry experience (Chaidhry's case) vs a pure academic approach (Fabozzi). I highly recommend it for anyone dealing with ALCO / Bank Treasury / REPO and ALM functions in general.
It's a n excellent reference for technical and senior managers.
