Future Soldier as an Army of One

Veterans of battlefields from the US Civil War through current-day conflicts (and, I suspect, from Roman legions) would recognize the actions, attitudes, and behavior of the drop-troops Heinlein describes, even while the weapons and tactics they use in their battles are futuristic.

Here, the commander is an integral part of the troop, sharing in their attitudes and emotions, even while he possesses a broader picture of the conflict and the purpose of the battles they fight. Heinlein's future soldiers are fully human, not a fragment of humanity, and each fights for a reason other than his signature on a contract.

Just as he thought about where the future might lead with weapons development, Heinlein considered how the soldier of the future might change, and concluded that he would not. The "army of one" technology he describes for his space Marines does not isolate the trooper from his fellows; rather it tightens the esprit de corps of the troop by giving them an elite power.

There is much more in the novel than this conception of the future soldier, which makes Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" a much more interesting read than Dickson's "Dorsai!" (which was published almost in the same month as "Starship Troopers" in 1959). New voting patterns in a one-world government, philosophy classes in high schools, levels of citizenship—these are all brought into the mix to support the central tale of the future soldier. But Heinlein's story centers around the starship troopers of the title, and that's appropriate.

You can read either of these books and enjoy the perspective of 1959 on the wars and soldiers of the future. Which direction will the future soldier take? Whether it is Dickson's increasingly-perfected genetic powers, or Heinlein's increasingly powerful weapons carried by soldiers essentially unchanged since Thermopylae, there seems little doubt there will be war.

And thus there will be future soldiers.

Read this book on the bounce!

I enjoyed it very much. I love the movie too and have no problem with the discrepancies between book and film. I think they complement each other well.

Read this book if you enjoy a good military experience story, even if you don't care for sci-fi. Most of the book is focused on the main character's training, which any veteran should be able to relate to. I do wish there had been more combat scenes - the beginning and the end are the most exciting parts!

Don't read this book if you find nothing interesting or have no respect for the military mindset. Avoid it too if you have no tolerance for ethical\moral worldviews outside of your own. The culture developed is not authoritarian, yet not progressive or libertarian either. Gets a little preachy, but doesn't bog things down.

No sex, no cursing, no graphic violence. Just a smart, quick and enjoyable read.

A great coming of age story, interesting political discourse, and wonderful sci-fi writing

After reading a long string of sci-fi "classics" that had interesting premises but sub par writing at best, Starship Troopers was a solid relief. The story is well paced, Johnny is very well defined as a character, and the writing is descriptive without diving into purple territory.

It can get a bit preachy, but given that it's as much a political philosophy book that's not terribly surprising. For the most part, the diversions into philosophy were well spaced, and largely suited the story as well.

If you're looking for a classic of sci-fi literature that will teach you about several modern sci-fi tropes, while also making for a good read, I would highly recommend this book.

Slightly Dated Yet Fundamental Reference Text for Thermal System Engineers

I'm an engineering professional who recently used this book for the study of the Design of Thermal Systems at Rochester Institute of Technology. It is written by William Stoecker, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and published in 1989.

The first two chapters are on engineering design and selecting workable designs. A 3rd chapter introduces engineering economics to forecast system costs in terms of future costs or translate future costs to present costs. The 4th chapter introduces equation fitting to model the behavior of subsystem components based on, say data from a catalog. This is followed by a chapter on system modeling, i.e drawing the functional flow diagram indicating mass transfer and work inputs/outputs from "black" box type unit components. Chapter 6 teaches how to simulate the model which helps in sensitivity studies before or after optimization. Mathematical optimization methods such as Lagrange Multipliers, Search Methods and Linear Programming among others are presented in chapters 8-12. For project work, possibly the best part of the book is contained in the Appendix. It lists thought provoking system design challenges that involve the full breadth and scope of the tools presented in the book.

The 3rd edition of this book can be used within the context of a senior undergraduate or first year graduate curriculum. The reason I write that is because Stoecker makes only passing attempts to elaborate elementary concepts in thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. So be warned since right off the bat, the 2nd chapter presents problems in the analysis of systems for optimization, for example a piping system for water conveyance or the design requirement to heat a swimming pool given various constraints. If it has been a while since you took thermo or heat transfer, you're well advised to use supplemental texts to fill the knowledge gap.

The ideal student of this text is one who is well prepared to face these challenging problems and has some degree of experience with them in actual working life. The merit of the book is in its well thought out problems that have been developed from Stoecker's teaching as well as research into real world design problems.

There is little possibility that a solutions manual for the text can be obtained so it is advised that the student develop his solutions with his own research and thinking. Socratic discussions with the lecturer to get further insights can always help. Which brings me to the fact that the ideal lecturer is one who has also worked in engineering plants with a number of these systems in actual practice - compressors, pumps, turbines, piping systems, evaporators, condensors etc.

The fundamentals of the math behind the optimization and system simulation may not have changed. But I've rated 4 stars for this book only because its design methodologies can seem a little dated for our times especially. Stocker hasn't really edited the book to present new concepts on concurrent engineering, design for environment, design for manufacturability, quality function deployment, decision trees etc. The meat of the book is in its analysis and optimization as the title says but I still think that the new era engineer will be served better if contemporary upstream methodologies used to generate concepts, arrive at workable solutions etc can be presented in the book. Which is why Adrian Bejan's "Thermal Design and Optimization" is also another excellent text on this subject. Stay tuned for my review of that book!!

Lacking Scholarship

I really wanted to like this book. After all, who wouldn’t feel good when someone tells them that they could be - should be and are - an artist or a genius? Such is the premise of Linchpin. Beginning with that as a premise, Mr. Godin spins an argument for all of us to become indispensable in our chosen fields.

Personally, I favor books with a strong research base and primarily inductive reasoning. Given a relatively large number of studies, certain generalizations can be made with a reasonable level of confidence. As a retired teacher, still committed to better understand all the factors which bear on achievement in life, Mr. Godin’s book attracted me. Sadly, what I found was a deductive work with sometimes seriously lacking scholarship.

If we are all geniuses under the skin, Mr. Godin, postulates, then there must be some evil forces conspiring to prevent us from achieving our potential. In the case of Linchpin, those forces are several: the “old” American creed of hard work without complaining, a mind-numbing educational system, and our limbic brain. Readers are even told that if they disagree with the major argument here, it’s the resistance of our “lizard” brain. This made me think of the emperor’s new clothes.

The problem I have with many inspirational works is that they fail to recognize the complexity of people’s interactions with the outside world. The educational system, my area of particular interest, for example, is not nearly as constricting as Mr. Grodin would have you to believe. The individual’s interaction with the world at large is quite complex and depends heavily on traits possessed both through birth and early development, circumstances like family social class and community, and chance events. Even Mr. Godin recognizes that some individuals who shouldn’t end up expressing their genius in powerful ways.

Though I agree that there is indeed genius in each of us waiting to be realized, I would urge individuals to do their homework before rushing out to show the world their artistic brilliance. As a teacher, I’d certainly urge teachers to do their best to learn what actions on their part have the greatest impact on showing students that they are capable of great achievement. There’s a very low likelihood that telling individuals that they’re capable of great things, but guiding them toward expressing it has potential… and a research base that can be learned.

An Astonishingly Vacuous Book.

This wasn't the first Godin book I tried to get into (many of my peers recommend him tirelessly for some reason) but it will surely be the last.

I prefer books that offer an educated and informative look into a subject, and then substantiate their claims. But in Linchpin Godin just goes on and on for 240 pages about virtually nothing. The last straw for me was on around page 220 out of 240 where he claims--without any evidence whatsoever--that cancer can be cured by the placebo effect alone. At this point I just couldn't finish the book and put it down in disgust. You can't just SAY this kind of thing. It's preposterous, dangerous, and deeply insulting to the countless lives (including some members of my family) that have been lost to this horrible disease. To say these people could have just thought themselves to better health is, quite frankly, disgusting.

This book is going STRAIGHT into the recycle bin. There is no way I will allow it to fill space on my bookshelf, and I surely won't be giving it to anyone else. All I know is that the carbon trapped in its pages deserves to be transformed into something more useful.

It is just as the late Christopher Hitchens once said: "That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence."

Head Games

When a book is really good, I will sometimes throw it across a room and scream "I always thought that was true, but never had the (guts, ambition, intelligence) to (say, write) it myself!"
So Seth Godin has written a very provocative book. I cribbed some quotes to use later in my own writing/teaching. But at the end, I'm asking myself, "So besides write and talk, what has Seth done down here in the real world with real employees and real bosses?" He lists himself as the CEO of something, but it's not a real company... So I'm thinking Seth is like my favorite preacher: full of good words and good thoughts, but at the same time, vastly out of touch with the real world. Check out all the unemployed talent in Hollywood and feel their pain. Consider the artists selling shoes because they want to eat. Perhaps there is genius within, but perhaps the world has a limited appetite/tolerance for greatness.

About the Author

Dominic Sweetman is a member of the last generation of programmers who could reasonably hope to understand computer systems from bottom to top. His rich career began with low-level coding, progressing from OS development to LANs to distributed systems. Dominic is an experienced designer and developer of hardware systems, CPUs, networks, and operating systems. He was a founder member of Whitechapel Workstations, and in 1988 founded Algorithmics, a MIPS consulting firm of which he is the director. Dominic lives with his partner, two grown-up children and three cats in north London.

Great Introduction to using MIPS

I'm just getting started on a project involving embedded MIPS systems, and this book has been very helpful in easing my way into this new world. Very well written, and it assumes the right level of knowledge. Not so basic that it explains every concept of architecture design, but not so advanced that it requires any previous experience.

I highly recommend this for getting your feet wet with MIPS programming.

Lived up to the reviews (Excellent)

As a developer of a MIPS softcore (YARI, an FPGA implementation), I find this book to be an excellent reference and highly readable. While it doesn't cover 100% of the intricate details, it comes remarkable close.

Since the long and intricate history of the many many revisions of the MIPS architecture can be hard to follow, I was very excited to find a comprehensible account of this and many of the reasons why.

The writing style is engaging and light - remarkable for a topic that easily comes out dry.

Very informative

This is a great book and a must have if you are developing any low level code for a mips based processor. I have been working on a mips based project for the last 4 months and feel this book was very beneficial in getting up to speed. The book is organized well with in depth practical details on how things work.

At the end of each chapter is an extensive reference list should the reader wish to explore particular topics in more detail. Written by a highly experienced manipulative therapist, this book would be a valuable guide to students and clinicians of various disciplines (including physiotherapists, manual therapists, chiropractors and osteopaths) involved in the management of neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction. I cannot recommend this text highly enough: I personally found its earlier edition invaluable as a student during practical exams and clinical placements. For those seeking more extensive information on treatment options Petty's earlier text, Principles of Neuromusculoskeletal Treatment and Management- A guide for Therapists, serves as an excellent companion.

Boring Book, Excellent Condition

My first review, ever! Book looked completely new! Excellent condition, but the book is very boring & the words are small. Everything is in black & white. I am rating it 4 stars because of the good condition and because of the shipping. It took a while to be delivered but I received it, right in the nick of time! I would only recommend this book if it is needed for class, I am a psychology major and I see no real benefits too it. There are other better books out there with the same information, buy those books instead!

Sometimes lyrical, this memoir by a German youth who miraculously survived four tours of duty on the Russian front during WWII—he died on his fifth deployment—is a significant historical document. It is also a laborious and overwrought cacophony of Wagnerian proportions. Reese, who was a 20-year-old bank clerk in 1939 when he was first drafted, inhabits many different worlds, all of them conflicting. Despite Schmitz's assertion that Reese was "no Nazi," he was, like the vast majority of German youths of the time, deeply imbued with Nazi ideology and experienced the war as a sort of sacrament. Duty, abdication and heroism are just some of his motifs. Reese sees himself as a poet deciphering the human condition, but mostly he is just a soldier who plays his part in the atrocities—often exuberantly. "We are war. Because we are soldiers

I have burned all the cities, strangled all the women, brained all the children, plundered all the land. I have shot a million enemies, laid waste the fields, destroyed the churches, ravaged the souls of the inhabitants, spilled the blood and tears of all the mothers. I did it, all me. I did nothing. But I was a soldier."

Thus begins Willy Peter Reese's "A Stranger to Myself: The Inhumanity of War: Russia, 1941-1944. Winston Churchill may have said that history is written by the victors, but the recent discovery and publication of these memoirs provides some evidence that history's `losers' sometimes also have a chance to contribute. A Stranger to Myself is a valuable addition to our collective memory.

Willy Peter Reese was a recent high school graduate and a trainee bank clerk when he was drafted into the German army in the spring of 1941. The German invasion of the USSR, Operation Barbarossa, began during Reese's basic training. Like many of his fellow soldiers, Reese thought he would be home by Christmas. Reese was quickly disabused of this notion once he found himself in the middle of what may be the most brutal fighting in the history of humanity (or inhumanity). Not only was the war on the eastern front fought between armies but it was a war in which brutality was inflicted on the civilian population on an unprecedented scale. In addition to the Holocaust inflicted on the Jews of Poland, the Ukraine, and Belarus, millions of other Poles, Ukrainians, and Russian civilians lost their lives through hunger or murder, along with millions of Red Army and German prisoners. As noted so aptly in the Preface, Reese found himself in the "greatest abattoir in human history".

This memoir emerged in 2002 and represents the reflection of Reese on life in the abattoir. Reese kept a diary during his time as a soldier. He'd set out his thoughts on every scrap of paper he could find. He would write during lulls in the horror or sitting in an army field hospital after being wounded. He wrote long letters home to his mother and father. Sent home in late 1943 after being wounded, Reese took his diary and those letters home and turned it into a manuscript. He left his manuscript with his mother and returned to the front. He was killed in 1944. His mother kept all his documents as a shrine to her dead son. A Stranger to Myself was published in Germany in 2002 and has now been translated (very capably by Michael Hoffman) into English.

Reese was well-read and considered himself a poet. As such these memoirs are unusual for its florid prose. The writing is not terse but extravagant in its description of Reese' desperate mood swings during his time on the front. However, the ornate prose, which would seem utterly pretentious in a piece of fiction, serves as a stark and compelling contradiction to the horrors that Reese writes about. Reese does not spare himself. He is brutally honest about the loss of his soul, his absorption with the efficiency of killing and his own mistreatment of the civilian population. It may be asserted that Reese did not mention the Holocaust or go into any great detail about the atrocities he saw committed and perhaps committed himself during his time on the front. That is a fair enough comment to be sure. However, after reading this book it is clear to me that Reese's focus was not war on the grand scale but on the war and its effect on him. These are internal, not external reflections. He, like virtually ever other soldier, was concerned first and foremost with his own or her own survival. The big picture is for other people to draw. Looking at it through that lens, Reese's memoirs are frank and brutally honest. He does not praise the war and in fact finds it irrational and unforgivable that his country waged it. Yet at the same time he has no aversion to participating in the fighting and the drinking and the looting that takes place. He displays a certain arrogance towards the people whose land he helps occupy. He wrestles with his demons and lays it out for the reader. Anyone who has seen this horror cannot believe in God he writes, yet he cannot help but think that the sins he and his comrades commit are unforgivable. We see him sink to a depth where it seems there is no turning back, where he stands up from his slit trench in order to be shot by Soviet snipers, only to see his spirits revive a bit when he gets a days rest or finds a bit of food to eat.

Reese's story is an important one for many reasons. It makes for compelling reading and it will have an impact on the reader that will linger after the book is read and put back on the shelf.

Terror, boredom, revulsion, obedience...life as cannon fodder.

A remarkable book which left a deep impression on me. At once literary in style and harrowing in its descriptions of life as cannon fodder, albeit thinking, passionate, feeling cannon fodder.

Willy Peter Reese was no hero. I am not even sure he was brave. However, as a good German boy he did his duty to the fatherland. First he trained to put on the "mask" of the soldier. Then he went of to war in Russia, mask in place.

He passed through a land where atrocities were the reality. He pillaged food from the starving. During the German Army's massive, fighting retreat Reese's unit was always among the last to get the order to fall back. His young eyes took in the full terror of the Nazi's scorched earth terror tactics. And he was part of it.

Along with his comrades, he routinely drank himself into some other world. When there was no other way to move it, he and his fellow soldiers relentlessly dragged the unit's artillery piece. Day after day. Month after month. Year after year.

All the while, his young mind processed what he witnessed. Temperatures so cold he could only cry. A body infested with parasites. Legs and feet with open oozing wounds. Taking shelter in hand dug hovels. Corpses hanging from trees, lying in ditches, everywhere. In between the bouts of horror and killing, however, were sights of beauty and moments of mental and spiritual clarity. His writing only stopped when his life ended.

Yes, Reese was trying to write like a writer. His loves were Rilke and others of that ilk. His book though, must be taken as a whole. To dissect it, to say this part is too wordy or that part is too introspective, is to miss the point. No, Willy Peter Reese was not a hero. He did his duty as he saw it. He tried to stay alive. He was not brave. Surely, then, he was the typical German male of the day who was thrust into a situation over which he had no control. He did not rage against his lot nor did he relish it. He simply existed through it as best he could.

A fascinating read

I stumbled on this book why visiting some sites about Stalingrad. It was mentioned by a couple posters so I decided to give it a read. I was not disappointed.

This is not a book looking for hard facts about places and people. It's the writings of a man coming to terms with war and how it changed him.

There is a great deal where the author goes into vivid descriptions about feelings, memories, and impressions of his surroundings. This could annoy some people.

Do not look for detailed descriptions of tactics and strategy.

What makes this book interesting is the contrast of hope and despair. The prose that starts a chapter changes to despair over time. There are ample descriptions of soldiers abusing people, looting, and drinking. Reese tells of his own actions and in the end drinks heavily. He even decided to get himself killed or wounded by standing up from a trench.

There is no propaganda in the book. He does not preach the glory of Hitler. Yet, he also doesn't mention other things such as the holocaust. There is even a reference to a friend in Auschwitz.

Towards the end of the book I got the impression he decided to die in Russia. There isn't anything obvious to state this idea. It's just how it read to me.

There are photos in the book ranging from his early days, joining the army and even a Red Cross report telling where it is thought that Reese died.

It is a good thing this book was published. The mother held his writings till she died. One aspect that is useful is that it goes contrary to a belief that the German army was clean in it's actions in Russia. I have read more then a few comments from people that argue the Germans were noble while the Russians were savage.

Probably the most prophetic comment was the end of the book:

"The war went on. Once more I went out there. I loved life."
