An Excellent Synopsis
By Egoman
This book contains everything a modern reader who is anything but a professional Middle East scholar could ever want to know about the history of the region (especially about the Arab-Israeli conflicts). Most importantly, it is presented in a strictly factual, unemotional manner which allows the reader to understand the current problems there and to make his or her own judgments without the facts being skewed or, indeed, being portrayed in a subjective light at all. With this account under one's belt, it is impossible to see the conflicts of the Middle East in a wholly black-and-white, right-and-wrong way. Indeed, the cold facts show how all parties involved have countless reasons for their behavior, and how no one party can ever be completely blamed.
Having also read what Mansfield himself considered to be his crowning achievement, "The Arabs", I actually feel that this is a superior work, at least for my purposes. "A History of the Middle East" presents a more sweeping view for the amateur (but serious) scholar, and can be used as a good reference despite being more than a decade old.
Mansfield follows the region from prehistory, through the Ottoman Empire, and into the modern age, explaining events and motivations in a reasonable and straightforward manner.
It must be mentioned that this is not an exciting book for those without a passionate interest in foreign affairs. But those who are driven to know and understand the goings-on of the modern world will find it an invaluable addition to their library.

2 books in one, buy the first edition.
By A Physician
I believe the original author Mansfield would be disappointed in what Nicolas Pelham has done with this "revised and updated" version of his book. Mansfield died in 1996 and Pelham was given the task of "updating" this history of the Middle East. I was very impressed with the first 340 pages of this book. I was looking for an even-keeled, unbiased history of this very charged and polarizing subject. I was very pleased to find that Peter Mansfield had done exactly that. Mansfield's original work went up to the first Gulf War and provided a very even history of events from ancient times to the immediate post-Gulf War period. He provides a very readable account that puts current events into context without betraying his own bias. I had been recommending this book to many friends, before I came to Pelham's contribution that picks up in the post war period. He doesn't even try to contain his contempt for the United States and it's allies. The language and tone of the book change dramatically and it is easy to tell where Pelham picks up in the 13th chapter: The Inter-War Years. His contribution amounts to an intensely felt indictment of the United States and it's policy in Middle Eastern affairs. He loses credibility when he throws in trite and petty personal attacks on Western leadership that have no relation to the events he is describing. Even the grammatical integrity changes. There were multiple grammatical and spelling errors in Pelham's chapter. The transition from Mansfield to Pelham is very abrupt and disruptive, regardless of your political leanings. I am very disappointed as the first 340 pages were excellent and exactly what I was hoping for. If you must buy this edition than be prepared. I would have given Mansfield's book 5+ stars and Pelham's contribution 1 star (being generous). I still gave the book a 4 star average because Mansfield's work deserves recognition and it comprised the bulk of the book.

    By Roderick Dale Hayes
I think this is a great book for learning cantonese. It uses the Yale system of romanization so you will need to get the hang of that first. Once you do it will become much easier to pronounce what you read. With no background in this language I've been studying cantonese for about three years and have found that for me the Yale system is the best. Having said that I must add that this book is great for learning to read and write chinese characters. If I had to do it over I would start out learning to read the dialogues in the characters rather than any romanized system. This will slow you down some but you will find that as you progress you will understand new words better when you see characters used that you already recognize. As far as pronounciation is concerned I had a lot of help from cantonese speaking friends. Also I used the Pimsleur 30 CD audio course which is excellent for learning pronouciation. I wish Pimsleur had additional more advanced courses available for additional study. I personally feel that once you have a basic familiarization with this book, say 8 to 10 chapters, you would then have great success with the Pemsleur course. After that finnish up with this book.Pimsleur reccomends that you use no other course with their's but I think getting the basics with this book first would be better. That's my oppinion anyway. The only down side of this book is in each chapter there is no english translation for the dilogue. You must rely on vocabulary that you have built as you've progressed. Also I am now ordering my third copy of the book because they just fall apart with use. I'll admit I can be a little hard on study books.
The bottom line is you can't go wrong with this book and I absolutely love studying cantonese.

A awesome book to get started in Cantonese but it's far from perfect...
    By Frankie
Complete Cantonese: A Teach Yourself Guide by Hugh Baker is a great book to get started with when you want to learn Cantonese. This book uses Yale Cantonese Romanization which is the most intuitive Romanization system for native English speakers. The book is broken up into 26 different chapters with two dialogues and sets of vocabulary each. There are also short exercises at the end of each chapter to back up what you have learned. Furthermore, there are grammatical explanation sections as well as cultural insight sections throughout the chapters to ensure that you not only learn the grammatical mechanics of Cantonese, but the culture behind it as well. There is also a Cantonese to English dictionary in the back of the book that you can use to look up the specific meanings of words you have covered, and what chapter in the book the word first appeared. There is also a grammatical summary section in the back of the book that summarizes all of the Cantonese grammar taught throughout the book. Finally, there are four revision sections that use all of the vocabulary and grammar up until that point in the book. By mastering these revision sections you can ensure that you have not missed much in the past chapters of the book. The only downside is that there are not Cantonese characters for these revision sections. therefore, you have to depend on your Cantonese knowledge up until that point to figure out what is being said(99% of native Cantonese speakers cannot read Cantonese Romanization and will be unable to help you).

I really like this book and use it when I conduct my Cantonese lessons, but there are several things about this book that need to be fixed in future revisions. First, my biggest gripe with Complete Cantonese is that it still uses a seventh "high falling tone" in Cantonese. While this is great for reference, the truth is that the "high falling tone" has become combined with the "high tone" in modern Cantonese, and is rarely distinguished anymore except in a few rare cases. Therefore, you will need to go through the entire book and change all of the "high falling tones" into "high tones" which can be troublesome and annoying. Second, the recordings do not match the dialogues in the lessons. This is because the book has been revised several times and the publisher never bothered to update the recordings to reflect these changes. Third, many of the Cantonese characters used in the book are not standard. I suppose you can argue that there is no standard set of characters for Cantonese, but there is an unofficial set used by native Cantonese speakers, and book does not use them. Fourth, some of the phrasing in this book are rather outdated and awkward in 2014. There is nothing worse than wasting your time learning something archaic that will result in a native speaker laughing at you when you say it. Fifth, the binding of this book is rather cheap. I treat my books with care, but this book has fallen apart on me a few different times(I'm on my third copy). Sixth, the book uses "lak" an awful lot when a simple "la" would do just fine. Seventh, this books mixes up the 啦 and 喇 characters constantly. The Romanization is always correct, but the characters are constantly switching around(啦 is typically "tone one" while 喇 is typically "tone 3"). Finally, the book progresses at a fast pace for many learners. I've had several students complain to me that this book moves along too fast. Therefore, I have to frequently supplement the material in this book with Colloquial Cantonese, so that my students are more comfortable with the combined grammar and vocabulary of both books to move along in this book.

In any case, despite these shortcomings, I think this book is the best readily available Cantonese book on the market today. It's very consistent and seriously challenges the learner to improve their Cantonese at a rapid rate. Once you master the Yale system and are familiar with the tones in Cantonese, you will have a strong enough foundation to take full advantage of this book. After you have mastered this book, you will possess the skills to move on to the intermediate level in Cantonese and beyond. If Complete Cantonese: A Teach Yourself Guide is your first step in your Cantonese journey, it's a step well placed.

    PROS:
    * Detailed introduction to the Yale Cantonese Romanization system.
    * Detailed description of the Cantonese tonal system.
    * Yale Romanization most intuitive Cantonese Romanization system for native English speakers.
    * 26 uniquely different chapters each with two dialogues and sets of vocabulary.
    * The dialogues and vocabulary are interesting and practical.
    * Cultural insight sections that explain Hong Kong and Cantonese culture.
    * Detailed grammatical explanations as well as a grammatical summary section in the back of the book.
    * Recordings to accompany the dialogues(a bit inaccurate though).
    * Four revision chapters that summarize everything you have learned up until that point.
    * A Cantonese to English dictionary in the back of the book.
    * Fairly inexpensive.

    CONS:
    * The seventh "high falling tone" in Cantonese is included which is not really distinguished anymore in modern Cantonese.
    * Recordings don't match the dialogues.
    * Cantonese characters are not standard and are at times awkward.
    * Some outdated and awkward phrasing that is not used anymore in 2014.
    * Binding is weak and the book will eventually fall apart with regular use.
    * Some of the characters are outright incorrect, but the Romanization is always correct(stick with that when in doubt).

    a pretty good book
    By William A.
Overall, a pretty good book. In all honesty, this is probably as good as it gets when it comes to Cantonese textbooks. Your only other options are the Sydney lau books from 1973, or the Yip Intermediate Cantonese text from 2000.

That being said, I have a few reservations.

First, this book has a terrible identity crisis. It cannot decide whether or not it wants to be beginner, intermediate, or advanced text. After the first few chapters, each successive chapter is littered with dozens of nouns and adjectives that are totally useless to a beginner who can still barely form sentences, let alone discuss the economy of Hong Kong. I understand that they want to go with the "complete" aspect and provide everything you need, but it seems haphazardly put together without much thought for what people might think. As someone who has studied Mandarin for 3 years, I strongly believe that introducing advanced vocabularies while still learning the basics doesn't do any good.
To add to this, this book seems to assume the reader has no underlying knowledge of Mandarin. I suppose this is fair, but I imagine the folks studying Cantonese who have no exposure to Mandarin are an incredibly small minority. The example sentences are written in the bizarre romanization system rather than Chinese characters, which is just appalling for a Chinese textbook.

Secondly, for Christ's sake, please update the audio materials. It starts out as a mere annoyance to here the speakers say 喺邊syu instead of 道。By the time you reach chapter 19, the audio track is completely different from what they have written down in the book. The audio is over a decade old, it is time to update it. The more they keep updating the text while letting the audio fester, the less relevant this book will become.

Small tidbit - I agree with others. The binding is cheap and falls apart easily.

Through The Storm, by Lynne Spears

We all want our children to succeed. What happens when they do?

Britney Spears wanted to sing ever since she was a little girl. But the years of sacrifices, auditions, performances, albums, fame, and paparazzi left the little Louisiana family swept up and spun around, and nothing turned out the way anyone ever imagined or wanted. Now Lynne shares the inside story of the Spears family as only a mother can.

Through the Storm takes readers outside the narrow orbit of the Hollywood glitterati. Lynne shares how fame forever changed their family; her regrets letting managers, agents, and record companies direct the lives of her children; the challenges that shaped Lynne and Jamies failed marriage and how they affected Bryan, Britney, and Jamie Lynn; the startling events that led to Britneys breakdown; the aftermath of Jamie Lynns pregnancy; and how the family has tried pulling together to recapture a sense of hope and purpose.

Through the Storm, says Lynne, is the story of one simple Southern woman whose family got caught in a tornado called fame, and who is still trying to sort through the debris scattered all over her life in the aftermath. Its who I am, warts and all, with some true confessions that took a long time to get up the nerve to discuss.

    A Cautionary Tale
    By Elizabeth Osborn
As a teenager, I'd been a huge fan of The MMC, and had been sort of shocked when Britney exploded onto the music scene in 1999. I'd heard the "stage mom" rumors about Justin and Britney's mothers, and I was interested to see how Lynne would defend herself.

And it's not a great defense.

Having grown up with Southern Christian parents, I find it hard to believe that Lynne Spears was as naive as she claims to have been, particularly when it came to the '99 Rolling Stone magazine cover.

Lynne writes, "What I saw was Britney in a bra and hot pants, sitting on her bed . . . 'Let's stop now,' I said, flustered and uncomfortable." She goes on to say, "We assumed we would have final say over which pictures were chosen. Besides, they took so many cute shots, why would they want this one . . ?"

When you think Rolling Stone, do you think 'cute' or 'hot'?

    Hm.

According to the book, also present at the time were Britney's agent, Larry Rudolph, and her father. Between the three 'managing' adults present at the photo shoot for this internationally-known magazine--one that is extremely infamous in conservative Christian circles--not one person would have looked at the contract and demanded to have their say? And beyond all that, Britney was 18 years old at the time. She was making her own decisions. She had a right to. If her parents were as down-home and Christian as we're being asked to believe over and over again, wouldn't they have raised her to at least ask herself the question, "What will my mama think?"

Instances like these force me to question the narrator's sincerity. I believe Lynne is telling us the events in a true light, but I can't quite she's telling us all of her story.

But that's what this book is. It's Lynne's story--she doesn't speak for Britney, Jamie Lynn, or anyone else. That's the way it should be. She does speak openly about her relationships with her parents and siblings, friends, and co-workers. She obviously loves her children and grandchildren very much. But something seems to change when she writes her perspective on Britney and Jamie Lynn's fame, and the paths they took to get there. I don't believe she is withholding things from the reader as much as she may be withholding things from herself.

THROUGH THE STORM gratefully acknowledges many of the sacrifices family and friends have made to the Spears brood, and accepts that compromises were made by many different people, herself included. But above all the fame and blame, this is a story of a mother who desperately wants her children to know the grace, redemption, and fulfillment waiting faithfully for them.

    A Tabloid Story
    By Mike Gibbons
Lynne Spears describes herself as a

"...simple Southern woman whose family got caught in a tornado called fame..."

As the mother of Jamie Lynn, Bryan and Britney Spears she says she wrote this book,

"...to hand something permanent down to my children and grandchildren, a record of our lives together..."

I went in with low expectations, that were indeed met, but I did enjoy a few insights that are worth noting. Although I can't recommend it, I can offer the following thoughts after reading:

Moderate our judgements - When you first think of Britney Spears mother what do you think? I confess, before reading this book, my first thoughts were harsh and simplistic. "Surely anybody that would allow their daughter to end up there has to be a "shameless self promoter" who is in it for herself or a "stage mom to the tenth power" or perhaps she is totally absent from her daughter's life."

The reality of who Lynne Spears is, and anybody, for that matter, is more complex than that. As she says,

"Often you don't know a person's story, and if you did, you might very well understand his or her actions better...there [is] a flesh-and-blood woman behind the mythological monster the tabloids [have] created."

Let's not be so quick to judge character or, especially, motives.

The depravity of man is obviously, and demonstrably, true - Lynne offers up many examples of this, although obviously not described in those terms. Consider Sam Lutfi,

"Sam came into my daughter's life at a time when she was at her most vulnerable."

A manipulative "manager" for Britney, Sam exerted such a level of control over Britney at one point that her family had to go to court to remove him from her presence. From mixing prescription drugs with her food and drink (without her knowledge) to attempting to get Britney committed to a psychiatric ward to maintain his control over her, Sam was a perfect example of the depravity of man.

Or consider the Rolling Stone photographer, an "eccentric, artistic guy", who photographed Britney wearing nothing but a bra and hot pants, then seventeen, in her bedroom...alone. This is a child for crying out loud! Is there no decency in this "artistic guy"? More on the obvious question of parental supervision later.

Never trust the tabloid media (or the MSM for that matter) - Arguably an extension of the previous point, the paparazzi, however, deserve their own dishonorable mention. Chapter 24 should be required reading for everyone that even remotely longs for the fame of the world. Pray for those who prey on others. The parasitic nature of this despicable industry is appalling. We've all heard the weak arguments, "There is a price to pay for fame", "I'm just doing my job", and "She is a public figure". As Lynne says however, "...where are the lines?"

Lynne tells of the boisterous airplane passenger who, disingenuously, tried to befriend her to obtain information about her daughter. She tells of striking up conversations while in line at the grocery store, "...only to find out a few days later that I have given an "exclusive" to a tabloid magazine."

According to Lynne, Britney has seventeen full-time paparazzi assigned to her, night and day. Any industry that has to go that far to get "the dirt", can't be trusted. Don't buy the tabloid papers or magazines. Don't participate in their manufactured, and salacious, gossip.

Parents make mistakes - As Michael Hyatt notes, it is tough to be hard on parents because we have all made our share of mistakes. To her credit, Lynne admits her mistakes honestly. Therefore, I am not going to point fingers but we can learn from her.

In describing the Rolling Stone incident, Lynne says,

"For some reason, the photographer wanted to shoot some pictures in Britney's bedroom...When that bedroom door suddenly shut tight, though, alarm bells started ringing..."

With all due respect, the alarm bells should have been ringing long before that.

"I trusted in the professionals surrounding my daughter to make the right decisions...but by deferring to experts, I gave up far too much influence."

We all make mistakes, but don't abdicate your kids to the "professionals", whether they are school teachers, youth ministers, the media or the kid's peers.

Children, ultimately, are responsible for their own decisions - Children, especially teenagers, will make their own decisions. The best parents in the world may lose their children to the world. Only God has sovereign control over the heart and affections of another (Proverbs 21:1). Everyone will die for their own sin (Ezekiel 18:1-4, Jeremiah 31:29-30, Ezekiel 3:17-21).

When Jamie Lynn got pregnant, Lynne says,

"...Jamie Lynn had never done a solitary thing to raise even an eyebrow, and she certainly had left not one miniscule clue as to what they were obviously doing. She had always been responsible..."

Assuming that is true, Jamie Lynn made a bad choice contrary to what she, apparently, had been taught. This doesn't abdicate the parents responsibility to teach our children, but it should make us realize that (I'm paraphrasing Dan Phillips here) we can't place blame on any person for another's sin.

Did I gain from reading this book? Yes, but there was nothing here I couldn't have gained elsewhere in a "meatier" fashion. Upon finishing I felt I had contributed to the tabloid, celebrity, gossip culture that the book implicitly, and explicitly, criticizes. I felt I had invaded another family's privacy. Lynne says she wrote the book for her children as something to pass down. If that is truly the case then why make this book public? How about just writing it down and have it bound and passed out to her family only? I appreciate the insights from her life but in the final analysis it made me feel like a voyeur of the Spears hidden moments.

Proof that you Can't Believe Everything you See or Hear
    By Victorya Rogers
Surprisingly this was a great read. I finished it in one sitting. If you watch television or skim headlines at all you MUST be aware of the sad downfall of Britney Spears. We all have our assumptions based on the flashes across the TV screen, magazine covers, countless websites and newspaper headlines. Lynne Spears sets the record straight. This book is NOT a tell-all book of gossip on her daughter, nor is it a parenting manual. Rather it is a memoir of her life and the truth behind the scandal, which is far from what the public has been told up to this point.

If you're looking for scoop though, you won't be disappointed either. Lynne reveals what was happening in their world the day Britney shaved her head, attacked the paparazzi with an umbrella, was forced from her home by police and paremedics and more. Lynne also addresses the pregnancy of her daughter Jamie Lynn.

All in all, you come to learn (if you haven't been smart enough to know already) that there is dangerous power in the press and paparazzi. No celebrities do NOT sign up for this kind of attention nor do they deserve it. Adoration is one thing, assault so extreme you can't even literally walk out your front door is another. No one signs up for that, no matter WHAT you tell me about them choosing fame. The craziness and obsession that drives photographers to that extreme is a relatively new phenomenon that must be controlled before we have another celebrity death, ala Princess Diana. What will be the turning point? I don't know. What I do know is that Lynne Spears paints a real, heartfelt, non-glamorous picture of the world she and her children were thrust into all because her daughters LOVE to sing and dance. I was impressed with Lynne Spears faith, vulnerability and willingness to let it all hang out. Both Lynne's daughters and her son will be proud of this book. Unlike other celebrity moms who have destroyed their mother/daughter relationship by writing tell-alls, Lynne Spears has written a book that honors them without glorifying or excusing any of their failures, as well as encourage us all to have strength in the storm, no matter what storm we face.

Pick up this book and find out for yourself. You'll find yourself not judging Britney so harshly, rather you'll actually start praying for her! (Something she and her family would appreciate I'm sure).

Sitting at the Open Door of the Heart, by John M. Grenafege

"Every moment is an opportunity, every moment is an invitation from Parabrahman. The opportunity that is being presented is to know the Self...there is no other reason to be here."

This book is a collection of timeless teachings from Advaita teacher John Grenafege of San Francisco, CA. The book’s chapters are taken directly from his Satsangs, and also include two of his writings.

John's message does not differ from that of Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta Maharaj, H.W.L. Poonja (Papaji) or other well-known Sages, but he does present it in his own unique way that keeps the serious spiritual seeker 'looking' in the right direction.

In this book, we are clearly reminded that if we wish to awaken in this lifetime, the commitment to knowing the truth has to be the highest. After awakening, which is truly the beginning, if one’s attention remains firmly planted in presence, pure consciousness, the I Am will naturally dissolve, evaporate, revealing what is prior to consciousness, in what is called Realization.

Each chapter begins with a pointer for reflection and meditation. It is a book that can be picked up and opened at any point for reading and contemplating the message within that chapter.

Pointer from the chapter You Don’t Have to Suffer:“It’s a dream of a thing called enlightenment. The more narrow one’s focus as believing in a body, in a world, in a someone — the more suffering. What if none of this existed?”

In addition to pointers, this book contains a number of black and white photos taken of the beautiful murals and artwork of Erin Tajime Castelan.

It is recognized that, as with all spiritual books, this book may make absolutely no sense to some, and yet be the ‘key’ for another. It is John’s wish that it be the key for you.

From the back cover: "My deepest wish is for you to realize the Truth of your Being. Know that the search and the one who searches are imaginary. When the mind is still, you are on the threshold. Abide there until The Only reveals and the imaginary evaporates."

This is a book to be kept and savoured, for each reading brings a new depth of understanding, even after one has awakened.

    Review

'Briscoe, Schuler and Claus have written an excellent book, which adopts a critical, yet highly accessible account of International HRM policy and practice in the multinational enterprise. It takes the research and practice literatures and integrates them in an innovative manner and combines rigorous research-based analysis with many useful practical examples. The book, which is a leader in the field, explains why managers need to develop International HRM approaches and strategies in relation to the strategic plans of the firm. It will be invaluable to both students and managers with an interest in the international dimensions of HRM.' -Hugh Scullion, National University of Ireland, Galway
